Bob, this is one of my all-time favorite videos I’ve encountered to date online. I’ve linked it from a page I created recently on videos for PD.

The answer to Ken’s question is, of course, “quite often.” I love his stories in this presentation. I also love this question about “What skills will it take to thrive in 2005?” I have borrowed that several times for presentations, including my talk at NECC, and I’ll use that again this week in Goodland, Kansas. My middle child was born in 2000 and will be 65 in 2065, so she provides a powerful visual aide (in person or via photos) when I discuss this. Someone at NECC talked about this line of conversation being similar to “guilting” teachers into addressing 21st century literacy skills. I look at it a little more positively- Most teachers do acknowledge “we’re here” in schools to do far more than just prepare kids to pass tests. The predominant educational culture in the U.S. wages are against that idea, however. I think Ken’s use of humor in this presentation to make his points is very effective, and memorable.

Ken has come to Oklahoma as part of the Oklahoma Creativity Project and may be returning again next spring for another presentation. This is GREAT, and I would love to hear him in person, but the key question is, what can we DO about these ideas? We had Alan November come to our school district in 1999 or 2000 to kick off a district-wide technology summit, but there the question was the same: It’s great to hear a super speaker and be inspired, but what are we going to DO on a practical level to change schools as a result of what was said and shared? I think that is a tough question but one with which we should all wrestle.

oops, I meant “thrive in 2065.”

    Wes,

I agree… the DO is the important word.

Say, did you know that you can “stream” the TED movie “The Future We Will Create: Inside the World of TED” on Netflix? I’m watching it right now!

Hey Bob, Thanks for the link! I’d seen the Ken Robinson video awhile ago, but didn’t realize the TED video was on NetFlix.
