Darren Kuropatwa’s Presentation: Thinking about Innovation in Education or Learning the Guitar

July 18th, 2007 · No Comments

Thinking About Innovation in Education

His presentation will be on his blog as well as on SlideShare…

Showing a great video of this guy playing guitar in a non-traditional way (on his lap… more like a keyboard or drum). Looking at a familiar instrument in a completely different way.

Darren thinks of his blog as his “guitar”… and he doesn’t play it in a traditional way.

Darren has “Answer Tips” on his blog… if you click on any word, it will connect to Answers.com and give you the definition… etc. Wow!

Darren uses the Acronym BOB (to stand for BLOGGING ON BLOGGING). Uses this to get feedback about where kids are at before, say a test.

Brings in an RSS feed from another Math Classroom.

Students use del.icio.us to build the “textbook”.

Brings in Smartboard sketches into the blog.

Also, Podcasted every class from last semester! Wow…

What can I do now that I can’t do before? Links, tags, rss most important features. Everything can be brought together with a “click”. Tags allow you to categorize content in a way that is meaningful to you.

Darren asks an interesting question: Is it sustainable… can it be carried on, with, say, another teacher… new school?

Darren has “Scribe Post Hall of Fame” for those exemplary scribe entries. Students start to want to “compete”.

Tells a story of Jeffereson who was in a class with Darren the year before… He volunteered to be the first scribe… so the bar got set very high right out of the gate that year.
