[17:29] Bisto Bock: http://atlantis.crlt.indiana.edu/public/pdInfo.pl
[17:31] Bisto Bock: http://bobtaughtme.com/bitbybit_wordpress/bitbybit_wordpress/?p=1316
[17:37] Trig Inkpen: hi bob
[17:38] Trig Inkpen: :)
[7:38] Norma Underwood: hello everyone
[17:38] Haley Swansong: we try to give you at least one buddy
[17:38] Trig Inkpen: I actually have yet to join the group, so I will be doing that soon
[17:38] Claudia Linden: hello
[17:38] Norma Underwood: Hello Claudia
[17:40] Haley Swansong: yes bob is talking
[17:40] Doran Horngold: Yes bob
[17:41] Doran Horngold: Can you hear him?
[17:41] Haley Swansong: Bisto explaining real opportunities for children in SL
[17:41] Doran Horngold: There are concerns about bringing kids
[17:41] Haley Swansong: Even though they can’t come in right now-we can build learning communiities
[17:42] Haley Swansong: Conversation needs to be focused on how it might be possible to bring them in
[17:42] Norma Underwood: other than virtual field trips?
[17:42] Haley Swansong: Doran as a librarn sees all groups and her school is looking forward buying land
[17:42] Norma Underwood: on the teen grid?
[17:43] Haley Swansong: Looking at ways they could take virtual field trips kind of attached to teachers
[17:43] Dre Menna: I would love to bring my students on virtual field trips
[17:43] Norma Underwood: I do that now, but would never really bring kids inworld here
[17:43] Haley Swansong: Looking to find a way where they attached to the teacher
[17:43] Norma Underwood: like the follow chairs?
[17:44] Trig Inkpen: I have something on that field trip idea
[17:44] Haley Swansong: If possible economically disadvantages children could see more of the world than they will ever se in real life’
[17:44] Dre Menna: I have the same problem. We dont take field trips either so I want to do something to enhance their learning
[17:44] Clyde Nootan: sorry gtg, plz send audio/text…thnx!
[17:44] Clyde Nootan is Offline
[17:44] Haley Swansong: Hoping to do treasure hunts do note cards
[17:44] Haley Swansong: Rebeccas shaing about land of Lincoln
[17:44] Norma Underwood: if they are watching on a large board it would work
[17:44] Doan: Rebecca went into the Land of Lincoln and had lots of ideas for collaborating. There are books published and authors from the time of Lincoln in the library. Also there are books for research that are about the period. It makes sense to work with the history teacher when she is teaching that time period. The plantation home gives visual understanding to concepts - such as the seperate kitchen that most kids do not understand. She wanted to have notecards placed so the students could find things by clicking and be linked back to books and history research bits.
[17:45] Dre Menna: I think that sounds like a great idea Doran
[17:45] Haley Swansong: Using the projector is all that has been possible in the past but lacked the interactive part
[17:46] Haley Swansong: As A lit teacher she saw all the books written around the time of civil war
[17:46] Haley Swansong: Immediate link between the history and Literature teahers
[17:47] Haley Swansong: Books for research as well as model environents that showed the civil war period
[17:47] Norma Underwood: was there any problem getting lit teachers to go along? They often have their own fav. books
[17:47] Doran: Rebecca is a lit teacher. She was excited.
[17:47] Haley Swansong: So far their have been conversations between land owners, and scioters so they could come in attached to the teacher
[17:48] Haley Swansong: Students in the earlier grades want to interact
[17:48] Dre Menna: I think the children need to be involved in their learning. I think it sounds like a great idea
[17:48] Haley Swansong: Watching the teacher does not take the place of the kids hands on learning
[17:48] Norma Underwood: they could certainly tell their teacher where to go (as an avatar)
[17:48] Haley Swansong: SL is a virtual kinethestic experience
[17:48] Norma Underwood: that would allow them a good sense of direction and how to express it
[17:49] Haley Swansong: There are some tools like follow me chairs
[17:49] Norma Underwood: but that would mean kids in adult avatars?
[17:49] Doran Horngold: No, Norma - they could actually be kid avatars. They have them in SL.
[17:49] Haley Swansong: Brower s where everyone is invisible except to the group
[17:49] Doran Horngold: we couyld have a type of avatar just for students
[17:49] Doran Horngold: Yes
[17:50] Doran Horngold: I have been there
[17:50] Norma Underwood: k
[17:50] Doran Horngold: very good
[17:50] Doran Horngold: No
[17:50] Doran Horngold: there are kids there in kid avatars
[17:50] Haley Swansong: avatars should they be kid avatars or adult avatars of more newbee ones
[17:50] jazmemo Zimminy is Offline
[17:50] Norma Underwood: well they do have child avatars available here but those usually creeped me out because there were adults in them
[17:50] Haley Swansong: Looking at perhaps having teachers able to have accounts that can only be used in the G rated areas
[17:51] Dre Menna: How does one find landmarks that are best for young children
[17:51] Haley Swansong: How can we use this new teaching environment safely
[17:51] Norma Underwood: the more interesting places have usually still been on mature areas
[17:52] Haley Swansong: ELelmentary kids see the areaas an educational environents where as older high school college want it to more interactive like WOW
[17:52] Bisto Bock: yes, trig :)
[17:52] Haley Swansong: Application for using the environment to extend education
[17:53] Haley Swansong: Trig working with 5-7 universities to get kids interested in applications in the power grid
[17:53] Norma Underwood: I wish this could really provide a safe place for kids
[17:53] Haley Swansong: Freedom woud like to use the environment but access is a big factor
[17:53] Bisto Bock: i like that idea :)
[17:53] Haley Swansong: Personal setting could be linked to avatar appearances
[17:54] Haley Swansong: Security and intellectual property also impact these questions
[17:54] Norma Underwood: the one thing you could not really control here is kids being able to access the profiles, etc
[17:55] Haley Swansong: Looking for a way to attach the kids to the group so that the teacher could mute others in the area.
[17:55] Norma Underwood: I’m glad they can’t do that on the teen grid
[17:55] Bisto Bock: lol
[17:55] Haley Swansong: Possible conversation to create a script where the teachers could mute others in world
[17:56] Haley Swansong: Almost like having the children in a bubble
[17:56] Norma Underwood: wow
[17:56] Haley Swansong: Security and contracting design work they had paid for but could not back up.
[17:56] Bisto Bock: wow
[17:56] Norma Underwood: how could you do that without owning all the land you go to
[17:57] Bisto Bock: yikes
[17:57] Haley Swansong: the problem becomes it backs up everything but picked up everything even items that had NO coy on items
[17:57] Bisto Bock: sounds like copybot
[17:57] Claudia Linden: It presents problems around intellectual property. LL has just posted about it. https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/blog/2009/08/04/our-content-management-roadmap
[17:58] Haley Swansong: Intellectual property rights and security becomes a real issue in SL who owns what
[17:59] Haley Swansong: Ties into the fact thy have to develop more security anyway so the time might be right to cimbine this with security for kids
[18:00] Haley Swansong: Looking at virtual caves in RL does not have the breadth and depth that SL has. That means that SL is the better product. Broader use.
[18:00] Claudia Linden: I need to run to another meeting. I do want to let you know that we are looking at ways to solve the challenges of how to let students have access to some of the great content in SL and keep them safe at same time. I will come back to another of your meetings. I look forward to hearing more of your ideas.
[18:00] Norma Underwood: I would want to be sure that the move to Zindra is successful before attempting this
[18:00] Haley Swansong: projector type environments
[18:00] Claudia Linden: thanks for letting me join you.
[18:00] Bisto Bock: thank you so much for coming, Claudia
[18:00] Norma Underwood: Thank you Claudia
[18:00] Haley Swansong: SL is it the wave of the future
[18:00] Bisto Bock: looking forward to talking more!
[18:00] Trig Inkpen: Thank you Claudia
[18:01] Norma Underwood: there is some great content kids should see here
[18:01] Haley Swansong: Should school districts engage in convesations with linden through Department of Ed
[18:01] Claudia Linden: Let me know if i can help you with that Doran. I can point you to good examples.
[18:01] Haley Swansong: to see if their can be a role for k-12 educators
[18:01] Rebecca Zebendein: I can second that - I have a teenager who is on SL teen grid
[18:02] Haley Swansong: One big step is to find people and the money to engage Linen labs in a discuaaion as to how to bring kids in SL
[18:02] Norma Underwood: Rebecca, is he/she in the general population or on a private education island
[18:02] Rebecca Zebendein: general pop
[18:03] Rebecca Zebendein: Not a lot there to do but shop and socialize, and the socializing isn’t always appropriate
[18:03] Haley Swansong: IN NC they streamed the video out of SL where the webinar took place
[18:03] Haley Swansong: NC is using streaming and NC might be a good place to have other districts make contact.
[18:04] Dre Menna: Being a special education teacher, I have always envisioned of creating a site that would allow me to take my students on virtual field trips.
[18:04] Bisto Bock: http://www.diigo.com/list/bobsprankle/second-life-museums
[18:04] Norma Underwood: Thanks Bob
[18:04] Haley Swansong: The book “Distruptive Classrooms” tends to see more things like sl in the future as a way of learning
[18:04] Norma Underwood: I have been setting up costumed field trips
[18:05] Norma Underwood: like to the Globe Theatre and such
[18:05] Haley Swansong: Educators are so buzy , we need to have a teacher one stop shop to make fee confortable
[18:05] Norma Underwood: isn’t that the role of ISTE?
[18:06] Haley Swansong: Give a more visual feel to searching for landmarks under educational landmarks in a kiosk
[18:06] Norma Underwood: gotcha
[18:06] Haley Swansong: Landmarks as well as guides available for the landmarks
[18:06] Dre Menna: good ideas
[18:06] Norma Underwood: yes
[18:07] Norma Underwood: we all seem to have our own lists
[18:07] Norma Underwood: maybe we should pool resources
[18:07] Haley Swansong: The search tool will have visual pictures and bief explanations for teachers
[18:07] Norma Underwood: The info towers have some of that
[18:07] Norma Underwood: cept I hate the rats
[18:08] Haley Swansong: Need to have a very visual searchable data base of landmarks.
[18:08] Norma Underwood: but it is all categorized by content area
[18:08] Haley Swansong: CALENDAR in world would also be nice
[18:08] Norma Underwood: yes, some groups are already having overlapping events
[18:09] Haley Swansong: Educators and landowners could add their names if they have ed material or are willing to talk to students about their subject area - put IM so they can be contacted. no shops
[18:09] Bisto Bock: no
[18:09] Haley Swansong: Rebecca regaied speech
[18:09] Bisto Bock: oh no!
[18:10] Haley Swansong: NC state has their library section with a nice setup with schools in their island
[18:10] Haley Swansong: Good place to look at for a start
[18:11] Haley Swansong: There are many libraries with pieces of information no comprehensive place for all
[18:11] Haley Swansong: Should a notecard be written up and hand ed out to locations that might be interested in helping
[18:13] Norma Underwood: bah, without audio I’m missing too much
[18:13] Norma Underwood: :(
[18:13] Doran Horngold: Sorry
[18:13] Doran Horngold: We are taping
[18:14] Haley Swansong: In order to enhance the opportunies we need to get more teachers in here to see what is available
[18:14] Doran Horngold: You will be able to hear it all
[18:14] Norma Underwood: oh thanks
[18:14] Haley Swansong: Quest Atlantis
[18:14] Thunder Insippo: dI had my last training tonight
[18:14] Thunder Insippo: in QA
[18:14] Thunder Insippo: no
[18:14] Josain Zsun: QA is another VW
[18:14] Haley Swansong: Quest Atlantis has a feel is another VR world made for kids
[18:15] Norma Underwood: You must be excited Thunder to use it
[18:15] Haley Swansong: THe day kids use virtual worlds is here
[18:15] Thunder Insippo: yes!!!
[18:15] Thunder Insippo: what happened to that
[18:16] Thunder Insippo: I want it too
[18:16] Haley Swansong: the kids are coming we really need to be able to preserve sites some go away when funding is lost
[18:16] Norma Underwood: yes that is a real shame
[18:16] Haley Swansong: Doran can you talk about Eightballs ideas
[18:16] Haley Swansong: with the teacher HUD
[18:16] Doran Horngold: Yes
[18:16] Doran Horngold: Thanks for reminding me
[18:17] Thunder Insippo: its associated with the avatar
[18:17] Thunder Insippo: At vste we have an avatar we can give
[18:17] Thunder Insippo: Pocahontas owns all the vste stuff
[18:17] Haley Swansong: baacking up some of these great features-where is the creative commons licneses
[18:17] Haley Swansong: Does SL use creative commons
[18:17] Thunder Insippo: we created her to give away if we leave VSTE
[18:18] Thunder Insippo: or get tired of the project
[18:18] Norma Underwood: many people would not want their stuff copied
[18:18] Haley Swansong: Perhaps when give away the things we make we could put a notecard in for creative comons
[18:18] Bisto Bock: yes
[18:18] Norma Underwood: we need to make sure more teachers do the creating then
[18:18] Bisto Bock: def
[18:18] Norma Underwood: so it can be shared
[18:19] Haley Swansong: Items should be intellectual property of owner unless they deem to give it away.
[18:19] Norma Underwood: and a lot of people are in here to make money
[18:19] Haley Swansong: Eightball has created a device where the they can talk witha web client.
[18:19] Norma Underwood: selling their designing and building abilities
[18:20] Haley Swansong: The teachers avatar is in world but the kids can type in the URL chat windpw
[18:20] Haley Swansong: Very similar to a back channel
[18:20] Norma Underwood: ok
[18:20] Haley Swansong: so even though they can’t walk around they can chat and ask questions of the guides
[18:20] Norma Underwood: could they use a Ning to do that with Chat added?
[18:21] Bisto Bock: def!
[18:21] Haley Swansong: Random book house and others might have writers in world that classes could meet
[18:21] Haley Swansong: was random house in here
[18:21] Norma Underwood: then they could tell the teacher what screenshots to take and more
[18:21] Norma Underwood: ooo meet the authors
[18:21] Norma Underwood: sounds great
[18:22] Haley Swansong: Using the client the kids could direct the teacher
[18:22] Norma Underwood: my kids were excited when another teacher avatar flew into the area I was showing
[18:22] Haley Swansong: Lindens have okayed the the use of sl on projectors
[18:22] Norma Underwood: so they wanted to talk to him
[18:22] Norma Underwood: they loved it
[18:23] Haley Swansong: Notecard givers could be used to gather information and to build a community of learners
[18:23] Norma Underwood: just meeting teachers from other states would be great
[18:23] Thunder Insippo: I need it
[18:23] Haley Swansong: Post the wiki the things you are willing to work on and other ideas
[18:23] Haley Swansong: Group information hold important links
[18:23] Bisto Bock: http://k12insecondlifenow.wikispaces.com/
[18:23] Dre Menna: we do need to spread the word
[18:24] Haley Swansong: Is it possible to have ISTE put a sign that lets teachers know where the wiki is
[18:24] Dre Menna: I’ve been typing
[18:24] Thunder Insippo: presentation-you can present your ideas at VSTE
[18:24] Haley Swansong: Doran will help keep up the wiki
[18:24] Norma Underwood: I will make sure to put the link in my skybox info box
[18:24] Dre Menna: As a special ed teacher, I would like to help create worlds for younger students
[18:24] Haley Swansong: send emails to bisto
[18:24] Haley Swansong: go to wiki ask for access and Bisto will confirm
[18:25] Dre Menna: definitely
[18:25] Haley Swansong: People can sign up for interest areas
[18:25] Norma Underwood: I just requested
[18:25] Josain Zsun: I’m not hearing Bisto although I see he is talking
[18:25] Thunder Insippo: i hear you
[18:25] Haley Swansong: These conversations are helpful to help determine where the resources are and how we can all help each other
[18:26] Haley Swansong: trying to
[18:26] Thunder Insippo: Hi Julie!
[18:26] Haley Swansong: Claudia Linden is willing to listne
[18:26] Haley Swansong: SL moving adult content
[18:27] Haley Swansong: Makes an opening an opportunity for education
[18:27] Haley Swansong: SL has an entire new market
[18:27] Norma Underwood: yes but it needs to be a successful move
[18:28] Haley Swansong: In order to make the move successful the security and privacy issues can be dealt with
[18:28] Dre Menna: children today are so technology driven. We definitely need to present academic information in a meaningful way in such a place like this
[18:28] Norma Underwood: I’m not so sure some of the adult stuff didnt just go underground or above ground
[18:28] Haley Swansong: This would be a good time to talk about spreading the word.
[18:28] Bisto Bock: bobtaughtme.com/bitbybit_wordpress/bitbybit
[18:29] Haley Swansong: Should everyone try to drop and give notecards to other interested people
[18:29] Dre Menna: that’s fine here
[18:29] Doran Horngold: Fine
[18:29] Haley Swansong: Going as fast as I can
[18:30] Haley Swansong: How about spreading the word
[18:30] Haley Swansong: Making contact with sites we see as educational
[18:30] Norma Underwood: I appreciate you trying to help us audio challenged keep up
[18:30] Haley Swansong: Should we also have a set of criteria before we add the landmark
[18:31] Norma Underwood: I tried once to only have PG ones but too many good ones are on mature land
[18:31] Haley Swansong: I think we should decide what deterimes a good landmark
[18:31] Haley Swansong: an educational site
[18:31] Dre Menna: so we need money to buy land to build worlds. how much does land cost anyway?
[18:31] Norma Underwood: a lot
[18:31] Haley Swansong: and perhaps the landowners have to agree to
[18:32] Haley Swansong: or have policies in place
[18:32] Norma Underwood: I would start with Esme because she has already done so much research
[18:32] Haley Swansong: Esme would be a great resource
[18:32] Norma Underwood: to help educators expand their landmarks
[18:32] Norma Underwood: some lists are so long you would never even get to all of them
[18:33] Thunder Insippo: I can try
[18:33] Thunder Insippo: I doubt it
[18:33] Thunder Insippo: but I dont’ know
[18:33] Norma Underwood: we also need to weed out landmarks that no longer exist
[18:33] Haley Swansong: My hubby says they do that
[18:33] Thunder Insippo: I would think rating would be SIM based
[18:34] Doran Horngold: Can you parcel off an island so that the island can be rated Mature but a parcel can be PG for the educational site that we would like to go to.
[18:34] Haley Swansong: the rest of the island mature
[18:34] Thunder Insippo: sounds good
[18:34] Thunder Insippo: sorry I was late
[18:34] Bisto Bock: depends, okay next meeting?
[18:34] Thunder Insippo: early
[18:34] Thunder Insippo: before the other groups meet
[18:34] Haley Swansong: I am good with tuesday
[18:34] Bisto Bock: tuesday usually good
[18:34] Thunder Insippo: yes
[18:34] Dre Menna: tuesday evenings are good
[18:34] Thunder Insippo: that would be good
[18:34] Dre Menna: 4pm what time zone?
[18:34] Haley Swansong: Sl time
[18:34] Thunder Insippo: SLT
[18:34] Josain Zsun: It is untils school starts, for me.
[18:34] Bisto Bock: once a month is all i can handle these days
[18:35] Haley Swansong: Bisto’s next month
[18:35] Norma Underwood: tomorrow our kids start here
[18:35] Thunder Insippo: me neither!
[18:35] Thunder Insippo: man that needs to change!
[18:35] Norma Underwood: and we are under extreme heat warning
[18:35] Bisto Bock: lol
[18:35] Haley Swansong: good for you no daylight savings time
[18:35] Bisto Bock: LOL
[18:36] Thunder Insippo: I *Love* Daylight savings time
[18:36] Thunder Insippo: nod
[18:36] Bisto Bock: from here it looks fine :)
[18:36] Haley Swansong: Next month 4:30 sl time
[18:36] Thunder Insippo: ok
[18:36] Bisto Bock: great :)
[18:36] Haley Swansong: I will work on what we think constitutes an educational site
[18:36] Bisto Bock: excellent
[18:37] Haley Swansong: Bisto’s place has an inside waterfall
[18:37] Dre Menna: you’re all neighbors
[18:37] Haley Swansong: see trigs weather station
[18:38] Haley Swansong: yes
[18:38] Bisto Bock: def!
[18:38] Haley Swansong: norma clothes in my basement
[18:38] Dre Menna: thank you
[18:38] Haley Swansong: her free educators clothing
[18:38] Bisto Bock: wow!
[18:39] Haley Swansong: trig is happy to have BISTO
[18:39] Norma Underwood: when will this be posted so I can hear it?
[18:39] Bisto Bock: thank you all!
[18:39] Bisto Bock: have a great evening
[18:39] Norma Underwood: and where?
[18:39] Doran: Bisto’s blog about next Sat or Sun. He will send a note to the group.

I am a children’s author and video maker currently producing a new series for children titled MEET ME AT THE CORNER. This series of virtual field trips is being distributed over the Internet as video pod casts on our web site http://www.meetmeatthecorner.org

I have just uploaded a new episode on Homing Pigeons, featuring Mr. Matthew Riley who raises and races pigeons in New York City. In this four minute-video, children are introduced to World War I carrier pigeon, Cher Ami, and the sport of racing pigeons.
