Student News: January 14, 2005

by the Students of Room 208

This week we started to learn a lot on Martin Luther King, Jr. We learned about his speeches and accomplishments. We watched a cartoon called, "My friend Martin." Some facts that we learned from the movie are: Blacks had to sit in the back of the bus; in 1956 there were bus boycotts to stop that; Martin's dad was a minister; and many other things. Mr. S. has put up a few links on our "Link of the Week" about MLK Jr. He is putting it up early for the MLK Jr. Day.

Another thing we have done this week is we have been continuing A Street Through Time . We are in the Iron Age. We are on the fourth page and in the year 600 BC. In the Iron Age they have a lot of different stuff. They have enemy heads on a stick. Also they had iron. And in this age, they now have a tatooing man. That is what we have been doing with the Iron Age.

Another exciting thing we have been doing this week is preparing for Literature Circles by practicing "role sheets". Role sheets are when you have to write or draw about your thoughts about the book. We also watched movies and took notes to learn more about Literature Circles. In Literature Circles you discuss the book in groups. At the end you do a presentation so you can teach more people about the book. You can also get them really interested, so they want to read. That's what we know about Literature Circles.

Finally, this week the Multi 3rd and 4th graders were split up in Art and Music so the 3rd graders from Mr. I's class and our class were together and the 4th graders from both classes were together. It will be like this for the rest of the year because in Music the 3rd graders have started to do Recorders and the 4th graders have started to practice for Starz 4 Broadway.
